Department of Sociology started in the year 2005 at the undergraduate level. The department organizes seminars, workshops, talks, and field visits on issues that are not only socially relevant but also of interest to the student community at large. Students are also encouraged to join and participate in all the departmental and co-curricular activities. Special lectures are arranged so that students can benefit from the same.
The Department offers Sociology as a Discipline Component both for Major and Minor.
Sociology is the scientific study of human society. The Department of Sociology provides its students with the fundamental knowledge of society, orients them to debate and conceptualize social issues and concerns, and also find practical solutions for the same.
The Department of Sociology is committed to teaching its students at the undergraduate level the foundation of sociology within the context of social awareness of diverse national and international social realities and issues, while building a foundation of intellectual skills for independent research useful for varied professions ranging from academic research and teaching to media, to administration, to public leadership, to management, and so on while also including extra-curricular learning.

Almost every year Honours students scored a good percentage and have pursued further higher studies at various universities in West Bengal.
